Pitcher Johnny Morrison held the powerful St. Louis Cardinals to only 6 hits as they were beaten by the Pirates 2-1. Morrison also collected four hits on the day and drove in a run.

Johnny Morrison went the distance and he had 4 hits as the Pittsburgh Pirates
topped the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 2 to 1 at Sportsman's Park.

In the top of the 6th inning Pittsburgh scored 1 run. St. Louis made it
exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

Morrison(1-1) got the victory, allowing 1 run for the game. Jesse Haines(0-1)
was charged with the loss. He pitched 8 and 1/3 innings giving up 9 hits and
3 walks.

Branch Rickey was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our
guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one.
That is what really ticks me off!'

Rogers Hornsby laced five hits on the afternoon as the Cardinals improved their record to 5-0.

Jeff Pfeffer completed the game without help from the bullpen and Rogers
Hornsby had 5 hits at Sportsman's Park as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the
Pittsburgh Pirates 5 to 3.

St. Louis came up with 2 runs in the 7th inning when they had 3 base hits.
Hornsby led off and started the attack as he hit a single. Jim Bottomley was
next and he doubled. Howard Freigau then banged out a single. Heinie
Mueller came up and he grounded into a double play. St. Louis banged out 16
hits on the afternoon.

The victory went to Pfeffer(1-0) who went the distance allowing 3 runs. Lee
Meadows(0-1) was charged with the loss. He allowed 5 runs and 16 hits in 8
innings.

'I didn't have my best stuff but sometimes you just get lucky,' Pfeffer said,
'this was one of those times.'







Cards Win Again In 15 On Walk Off Homer!



Jim Bottomley collected his fourth hit of the day when he sent a home run over the fence to win the game for the Cards in the bottom of the 15th inning.

Bill Doak delivered 6 solid innings and Jim Bottomley had 4 hits and scored 3
times as the St. Louis Cardinals topped the Chicago Cubs in 15 innings by a
score of 7 to 6 at Sportsman's Park.

Both teams were tied at 6 runs apiece after nine innings. St. Louis won the
hard fought contest in the 15th inning. Bottomley blasted a solo shot making
St. Louis the winners and sending the 2,554 fans home happy. St. Louis
banged out 16 hits on the afternoon.

Doak(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 6 innings. Ray Pierce(0-1) was
the losing pitcher in relief. He was unable to retire a batter giving up 1
hit and no walks.

Rogers Hornsby smacked 3 homeruns as the St. Louis Cardinals topped the
Chicago Cubs in 10 innings by a score of 12 to 8 at Sportsman's Park.

The score was tied at 8 after nine. St. Louis ended up winning it in the 10th
inning. The key at-bat was by Hornsby who made the crowd happy when he
cleared the bases with a Grand Slam homerun. For the game St. Louis out-hit
Chicago 15 to 12.

Harry Salmon(1-0) went 3 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. Elmer
Jacobs(0-1) was hit with the loss in relief. He was not very effective,
surrendering 3 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings.

'I felt great out there today,' Hornsby said, 'Maybe I should make a regular
habit of getting to bed on time!'

Pete Donohue pitched a complete game at Redland Field as the Cincinnati Reds
beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 4 to 3.

Cincinnati came up with the deciding runs in the 8th inning with 2 runs
utilizing 2 base hits. After two were out Sam Bohne began the rally when he
reached on an error. Jake Daubert was next and he tripled. Edd Roush then
was walked intentionally. George Harper stepped in and he drew a walk to
load the bases. Rube Bressler stepped into the box and laced a base-knock.
Pittsburgh made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the
needed runs across.

Donohue(1-0) finished the game allowing 3 runs in the victory. Johnny
Morrison(0-1) was given the loss. He allowed 4 runs and 6 hits in 7 and 2/3
innings.
